Superhero for Heroes Annual Fundraiser

Superhero for Heroes (SH4H) is GCCA's premier annual fundraiser. In it's 4th year, this creative event allows us to recognize everyday heroes while raising money and awareness of advocacy efforts within the child care industry. For the third year in a row, GCCA is partnering with The Freeman Project, a non-profit fostering memories of our fallen soldiers by providing educational scholarships and custom-sewn bears made from uniforms of the fallen or combat related suicide. The Freeman Project originated from Capt. Matthew Freeman’s last phone call to his mother before he was Killed in Action in 2009. He said, “Could you get a fundraiser going to get school supplies over here to Afghanistan? The kids would rather have pens and paper the food and water.” Two days later he was killed, but his message rang loud and clear. With the help of the community and the country, The Freeman Project was born.

According to iCasualities.org, close to 2,000 servicemen and women have been Killed in Action during the US War in Afghanistan and the US Department of Veterans Affairs reports, on average, 20 Veterans per day commit suicide. The Freeman Project offers 3 Educational Scholarships - one for siblings of those Killed in Action, one for siblings of combat related suicide, and one for a graduating senior from Richmond Hill High School. In addition, The Freeman Project offers custom-sewn "Matthew Bears" to a fallen service member’s family.
